A fascinating pair of Art Deco bar measurers meant to be wrapped around a pint glass and marked off in illustrated measurement units. The smallest—“one ounce” is for “ladies” and one gill (a quarter-pint) is for “gentlemen.” The next measure, “two gills” is illustrated with a mermaid, perhaps to suggest a lady who is a little freer with her favors! “Three gills” is illustrated with piglet and “one pint” with a big pig. The measures are made from pewter and are soft enough to be wrapped around the pint glass and have a viewing slit in the middle. They are dated 1926. The mermaid is based on a design by the French sculptor Pierre Meauzé who adapted African sculpture to French tastes and often depicted African women as mermaids. We have handled thousands of pieces of vintage barware over the years, and have never before seen these.
