An 18K yellow gold Sputnik ring by H Stern. The dome is bezel-set with round aquamarines. The Sputnik design was created in the 1950s to highlight the range of colored stones available from Stern’s Brazilian mines, but occasionally an example such as this appears set with a single gemstone variety. The design came to be known as “Sputnik” for its resemblance to the spiky Soviet satellite launched in 1957. The shank is stamped “18K.”
