An Art Nouveau medallist pendant or charm depicting Ares (Mars in Roman mythology), god of war, courage, and civil order. The front shows Ares in profile wearing a battle helmet, and the reverse shows accoutrements of battle including a sword, a lance, and a victor’s laurel wreath. The medallion was designed by Edmond-Henri Becker (1871-1971), a medallist who spent his early career principally at Boucheron. Some designs, including this one, were licensed to Savard & Fils. Savard is mostly known for gold-filled jewelry, but for a 2-year period, their catalog also included silver pieces. Due to the short production window, Savard silver jewelry is rather uncommon. The medallion is signed “Becker” and is stamped with Savard’s maker’s mark.
