A classic Art Nouveau silver pendant or charm depicting the Norse hero Sigurd (Siegfried) the Dragon Slayer who killed the dragon Fafnir and seized its treasure. Despite his association with Nordic legend, the story of Sigurd originally arose in France during the Merovingian dynasty. He is generally associated with the concept of courage and strength. The medallion’s reverse features Sigurd’s name and several of his attributes including a Viking hunting horn, oak leaves (symbolizing strength and stability), and flames. The medallion was designed by Edmond-Henri Becker. One of the most highly regarded Art Nouveau medallists, Becker designed principally for Boucheron. Some designs such as Sigurd were made for Savard & Fils. Mostly known for its high-quality gold-filled jewelry, Savard briefly made a line of silver jewelry. Due to the short length of production, these pieces are very uncommon. The medallion is signed “Becker” and is stamped with French silver marks and Savard’s mark.
