A French silver tastevin by Marc Parrod, executed in the style of an 18th-century wine taster and made during the early 20th century.
Parrod was a favorite silversmith of the Burgundy elite and was known for historically inspired “fantasy” tastevins. This example is one of the less common tab-handle versions. Instead of the serpent handle seen on many of his pieces, the tab is engraved with a wine-related image: a nude Venus standing over a fire while a cherub fans the flames.
The 2nd Century inscription reads “Sine Baccho friget Venus” — “Without Bacchus, Venus would freeze.” Bacchus represents wine; Venus represents love. The phrase gives the piece the playful, slightly risqué character often found in Parrod’s more imaginative work.
The bowl is decorated with grape clusters and a trailing vine motif, tying the design firmly to wine culture and Burgundy tastevin tradition.
