An unusual French 2nd standard silver tastevin. The bowl is worked in the traditional style with elongated godrons, recessed cupules, and raised perles. These various textures are intended to reflect light in different ways to help better judge the clarity and depth of color in wine. Rather than a traditional handle, however, this example has a classical mask in the Art Nouveau style perhaps representing Bacchus (Dionysus in Greek mythology), the god of wine, revelry and fertility. This is the only tastevin we have seen with Art Nouveau decorative elements. The tastevin is stamped with French 2nd standard (900/1000 purity) silver marks.
