A French silver tastevin from the Restoration period, executed in first standard (.950) silver and notable for its early strap-handle construction.
The bowl is worked with a combination of repoussé convex "perles," concave "coupules," and elongated "godrons" designed to scatter light, aiding in the evaluation of wine. The decoration is purposeful rather than ornamental, with emphasis placed on function and surface variation rather than later, more elaborate patterning.
The handle is formed as a flat strap enhanced with grape cluster decoration and directly attached to the body. This type of construction is associated with earlier 19th-century examples and gives the piece a more utilitarian, direct character compared to later forms.
Stamped with French first standard marks (.950) and an unidentified silversmith's mark "GL," the tastevin reflects the high silver purity and straightforward construction of the Restoration period.
A well-preserved and honest example of early French wine-tasting silver, with strong appeal for collectors focused on period authenticity.
