A brooch fashioned from a 22K gold 20-franc coin enhanced with rubies, diamonds and pearls in a platinum and 18K gold setting. The coin features the likeness of Napoléon Bonaparte in Revolutionary Year 12 (1804) while he was still Premier Consul, less than a year before he had himself crowned Emperor. Numismatically, this is one of the rarest French coins of the Revolutionary era. The coin is set at the four compass points with natural pearls amid fields of rose cut diamonds set in platinum and then between those elements with cushion cut rubies of fine color and brilliance. The rubies show inclusions typical of Burmese origin and there are no indications of heat treatment. The coin is prong-set in a way that avoided damage to a rare coin. The brooch could easily be converted to a pendant with the addition of a folding bail to the back. The pinstem and clasp are stamped with French 18K gold marks.
